IAUThe IAU — Vietnam Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2011 is an activity in the Teaching Astronomy for Development (TAD) program of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). This program aims at promoting the teaching and researching of Astronomy in countries where this science has not been well developed. As part of the TAD program, the IAU — Vietnam Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2011 also aims at the same goal. The workshop provides an opportunity for astronomers, astrophysicists, astronomy teachers and students throughout Vietnam and also from other countries to update their knowledge in astronomy and related sciences, to discuss their research in astronomy. The workshop is also an important step in developing astronomy and the teaching of this science in Vietnam.

In recent years, workshops on astronomy have been organized in many countries. In Vietnam, workshops have been organized in Hanoi, Vinh, Danang. The IAU — Vietnam Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2011 is hosted by Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in cooperation with International University — Vietnam National University at Ho Chi Minh City, is supported by the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development, from November 21 to November 25, 2011.

The workshop covers contemporary research topics in astronomy and astrophysics including:

  • Sun and Climate, Exoplanets/ Solar
  • Physical Characterization of the Stars: Understanding Dynamics, Chemical Composition and Age
  • Brown Dwarfs
  • The Dynamics of Star Clusters and Planetary Systems
  • Cosmology I, II, III
  • Cosmic Rays
  • Interferometric Observations of Circumstellar Envelopes
  • Dark Matter
  • Observations at 21cm & Gravitational Lensing
  • Pico Satellite

These topics are presented by renowned professors in the field of astronomy and astrophysics from Vietnam and other countries, in parallel with reports from other participants. More than sixty teachers and students from universities and institutes across Vietnam and three students from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Indonesia participated in the workshop.

The workshop is made a success by the great effort of the organizers and the participation of the participants. We are thankful t0 our co-organizers, sponsors, and participants who have contributed greatly to the success of the workshop. We also thank the editors for their work in making this proceeding.
